The chariot races were the most prestigious events in athletic festivals; they were held in the hippodrome or in the dromos.  The date given by Pausanais for the 4-horse  chariot race, 680 B.C.; in 648 came the race for ridden horses; then in 500 the race for  mule carts; in 496 the anabatos race. (Harris, p. 158)
